Pre-Ride Safety Check in Tampa

If a machine has been parked a while, or you just bought it used, the sensible move
is an hour on a lift before a long ride rather than a tow truck afterwards. We go over the
things that strand people or hurt them — and tell you what is genuinely worth fixing.

What gets checked

• Tires — tread, age, pressure and sidewall condition. Rubber hardens with age even on a machine that has barely moved.
• Brakes — pad thickness, rotor wear, fluid condition and any sign of a leaking line.
• Chain and sprockets — slack, alignment and tooth wear.
• Lights, horn and switches — everything a rider behind you depends on.
• Steering, suspension and wheel bearings — play, weeping seals and anything loose.
• Fluids and leaks — oil, coolant and brake fluid, plus where anything is seeping from.
• Fuel condition — on anything that has sat, this is the usual culprit.

The recall check is free, and worth doing

Open safety recalls follow the machine, not the owner. If you bought used, any notice went to
whoever owned it before you — so plenty of riders have no idea their bike has one outstanding.

Worth booking before

1. A machine coming out of storage after a season parked.
2. A used buy — ideally before you hand over money, if the seller will allow it.
3. A long trip, where a failure means a tow from somewhere inconvenient.
