It cranked slow, then it clicked, and now it does nothing. Nine times out of ten
that is the battery — but the tenth time it is the charging system, and a new battery just gets
killed by the same fault. We test before we sell you anything.

Battery or charging system?

They feel identical from the seat, and the difference is what you actually pay for:

• Battery. Sat for a season, over three or four years old, or was run flat and never properly recharged. Replacement fixes it.
• Stator or regulator. The bike runs fine once jumped, then dies again in a week. A new battery here is money burnt — the charging system is not putting anything back.
• Parasitic drain. An accessory, alarm or aftermarket wiring pulling current with the key off. Kills a healthy battery in days.

We put a load tester on the battery and a meter on the charging output. It takes a few minutes and
it tells you which of those three you are dealing with before you spend anything.

What we do

1. Bring the machine in, or just the battery if it is easier to pull than to ride.
2. We test it under load and check what the charging system is putting out.
3. If it is the battery, we fit and terminal-clean it. If it is not, we tell you what actually failed rather than selling you a battery that will die the same way.

A machine that sat long enough to flatten a battery usually needs a couple of other things. Say the
